“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.” – Gloria Steinem
Every good design project begins with some day dreaming.
How do I want to feel in this space? What makes it comfy and feel like home? How do I see us using the space? What is the over all vision?
That's what day dreaming is about. Imagination. Imagining the space in my mind. Creating a space that has an appeal that comes from the inside out. Sure it's fun to create Pinterest boards and read blogs with design ideas. But, for me, it has to start with a feeling. When I think about how I want to feel in the space, then things start coming together.
When we first walked in the house and I saw the beautiful water views I had a complete sense of calm. The place was a mess, and was seriously dated, and needed so much work, but the feeling was powerful.
The first thing that hit me was the wall to the kitchen. I knew it had to go! So I started my day dreaming there. I started to imagine what it would look like without the wall. Ideas came from wherever ideas come from, and I began to see it. Standing at an island looking out towards the water views, preparing food and talking to Larry, as he sat on the other side of the island. I imagined us eating breakfast and planning our day of exploring Southern Oregon. It felt light and open, peaceful and calm. Around us the colors and textures of nature filled the space.
Although this is what it really looked like. I could begin to imagine it open and expansive with the beautiful views.
And before long . . . the wall was demo'd and I could begin to see the view.
In the mist of demo chaos, here is a picture of making our lunch at the future island. My day dreaming is feeling more real.
It's important for me to remember that everything in the outside world was first an idea in someone's mind. That is what day dreaming and imagination create! The feeling that accompanies the vision starts the manifestation process.
Inspiration!
Today, as I sit here with my sketch pad, I am envisioning the kitchen design. The one that started with day dreaming. I took measurements of all the cabinets (we kept all the ones we removed from the wall.) And I am reconfiguring them into my vision.
The kitchen was remodeled recently due to some water damage. The cabinets are all new, although builder grade, we still plan to reuse them in our design. I have moved out of the day dreaming stage, into the nuts and bolts planning stage.
When I need to, I close my eyes, imagine standing at the island looking out at the beautiful lake view and embrace the feeling of our new space. One day when I open my eyes, it will be real!
"Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning!"
